What is Guided Imagery?


Guided imagery uses exercises that bring about deep relaxation and a heightened state of consciousness. A person in a deeply focused state is unusually responsive to an idea or image, which enhances the brain's ability to make lasting changes. Guided imagery exercises can actually teach people how to master their own states of awareness. By doing so, they can affect their own bodily functions and psychological responses.

Because every thought creates a physical or chemical change, it's very important to ensure that the thoughts we have are the ones that are going to create the physical or chemical changes that we want, not the ones we don't want.

How does it work?

During Guided imagery exercises, your body relaxes and your thoughts become more focused. This allows your body and your brain to accept the positive suggestions you want to work on immediately rather than using just sheer will power alone. Like other relaxation techniques, guided imagery can lower blood pressure and heart rate, and can change certain types of brain wave activity. In this relaxed state, you will feel at ease physically, yet fully awake mentally and may be highly responsive to suggestion. It is important to note that you are in control the entire time you are doing the guided imagery exercises.

Guided imagery exercises will help your conscious mind, the part of your brain that is the critical part, get out of the way, allowing the subconscious mind, the part of your brain that actually controls every part of your body, to come to the forefront. When the conscious, rational, critical part of the brain is out of the way, the goals you want to achieve can be accepted more readily by your subconscious mind. Once the subconscious mind gets a clear message about what you want for your future, and you continue to work to reinforce those messages by listening to your guided imagery recordings and practicing your affirmations on a regular basis, your goals will be much easier to achieve.
